A very warm welcome to Indian Whistlers' Association (IWA).

IWA is the world's first truly Indian whistling community founded on Sept. 19th, 2004 by Mr. Rigveda Deshpandey (The Maverick Whistler). It is India's 1st and only school dedicated to promoting Musical Whistling as a performing art.

Objective

IWA's key goal is to find, meet and bring together, Musical Whistlers from all over India, onto a single platform, to change the perception of whistling in India, get Musical Whistling recognition as a "Performing Art" and us whistlers as artists. We are trying to break the taboos and misconceptions in India associated with whistling.

Many people irrespective of age, gender, socio-economic status in India can whistle but do not know that it is a very old instrument and can be an art when done musically with complete pitch and rhythm. There are international competitions all over the world since 45+ years and its just starting to catch-up in India, though we have had whistling in Indian film music and ads since the 1940s. Therefore, it is our ultimate goal to have National and International Whistling Festivals in India and make a World Record in November, 2017 to reach out to every household. We have also started Whistling Classes via Web-Conferencing for our members located all over the world.

USP

IWA is proud to have 400+ whistling members-both male and female, of age groups 12-70 years from diverse backgrounds. Our whistlers are capable of whistling not just film music but also classical, western, devotional, patriotic and other diverse range of compositions. Besides the most common pucker style of whistlers, IWA also has a unique talent of bird whistlers, teeth whistlers, hand whistlers, finger/fingerless whistlers and warble whistlers. IWA has organized several shows and workshops all over India, receiving accolades from media organizations, educational institutions and individuals. IWA shows have provided a unique and unforgettable experience to its audiences all over India. IWA has won many prizes at the international level as well and has been featured by almost all major national and regional newspapers and tv channels for its unique initiative.

We meet in Mumbai and Chennai twice a month and have proper whistling classes that teach you whistling from the basics, history to how to perform on stage and at the International level.

Its a completely different ball game when it comes to whistling on stage compared to whistling for your friends and family or in a bathroom.

Milestone

IWA entered the LIMCA BOOK of RECORDS 2009 with 48 whistlers from all over India whistling "sare jahan se achha" in unison.
